November 15 (Jidosha Shinbun) -- The Toyota Corolla has been around for a very long time. Afterall, it was introduced in 1966. From it's beginings as a tiny Japanese subcompact to the popular AE86, the Corolla will have been around for 54 years in 2020. Toyota in a bid to give the Corolla an image boost in the U.S., introduced the new 12th generation Corolla in hatchback form at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. During the 2018 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Toyota showed off a Formula Drift version of the Corolla Hatchback. We're hoping this translates into an even sportier version of the hatchback to go head to head against the Honda Civic Type-R. However, only time can tell as they have not announced any such plans. Completing the lineup, Toyota reveals the 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new 2020 Corolla sedan has a slightly different style from the hatchback. The look is evolutionary from the 11th generation, but is much bolder. What's interesting is that if that big grille opening had the Dodge crosshairs, it would of been a great look Dodge. The DRL and turn signals give front end sort of look like ram horns. The rear of the car, on the other hand, is not as bold as the front. The rear of the new Corolla seems to have gottten some inspiration from the Ford Fusion or Edge and it also subtly reminds us of a Subaru. It's more conservatively styled compared to the front of the vehicle. The conservative style continues inside the car. There's nothing offensive about the interior, and it looks more modern. Unlike the exterior, the Corolla sedan shares the same interior as the Corolla hatchback.

Powering the Corolla is the same 2ZR-FAE engine as the previous generation, but in the 2020 Corolla, it will produce more power with better efficency. The Corolla is also available with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder M20A-FKS engine. The M20A-FKS engine is also used in the Corolla Hatchback, but produces 169 horsepower at 6,600 rpm in the sedan.
